Reablement

Reablement focuses on helping individuals regain skills and independence after illness, injury, or a period of hospitalisation. At DT Physio, I support people to rebuild their ability to carry out daily tasks, maintain independence, and avoid long-term care where possible.

Understanding Reablement

Unlike traditional care, reablement encourages individuals to do things for themselves, rather than having tasks done for them. The aim is to boost confidence, physical function, and independence through short-term, intensive support.

When Reablement Is Needed

  • After hospital discharge following illness, surgery, or injury

  • Following a fall or sudden decline in mobility

  • During recovery from an acute health episode (e.g. infection or deconditioning)

  • When struggling with self-care or daily activities

How Physiotherapy Can Help

  • Goal-Oriented Rehabilitation – Working on practical tasks such as getting out of bed, preparing meals, or walking to the toilet.

  • Strength & Balance Training – Supporting safe and confident mobility at home or in the community.

  • Functional Movement Practice – Focused sessions to help with dressing, bathing, and household tasks.

  • Equipment Advice – Recommending aids or adaptations that promote independence.

  • Supportive Education – Encouraging self-belief and developing strategies to prevent setbacks.

With a personalised, empowering approach, I help individuals recover function, improve their quality of life, and remain safely in their own homes.
